East Halton Music Curriculum Intent

Our primary school curriculum is carefully designed to ensure a broad and balanced education that meets the needs of all pupils. The curriculum intent aims to inspire a love for learning, foster curiosity, and equip pupils with the skills and knowledge they need to flourish academically and personally. It is rooted in a deep understanding of the local community that ensures that we ‘value our past’, celebrate diversity, promote cultural capital, prepare pupils for life in modern Britain and ‘look to the future with hope’.

Commitment to our pupils is fulfilled through our high aspiration, passion and drive and is founded upon the following four key principles:

1. Unlocking children's true academic potential to ensure that they ‘flourish’.

We aim to develop confident, resilient, inquisitive, independent & knowledgeable children through the delivery of a coherent & structured enquiry based curriculum which builds on prior learning from nursery to year 6. Individuals are challenged to reach their true potential and be ready for the next stage in their education. We want our children to believe in the transformative power of change and to ‘look to the future with hope’ in their hearts.

In music we do this through:

• Build a music curriculum that is progressive and builds on previous learning

• Build a curriculum based on the ‘Charanga Programme’

• Promote a love of music and singing across a broad curriculum

• Teach the music curriculum in an experiential, practical way

• Encourage children to participate in opportunities to demonstrate a love of music and to showcase their skills

2. Unlocking children’s true social and emotional potential to ensure that they ‘flourish’ as unique, well-rounded individuals.

We aim to foster happy and healthy children, within a safe environment, who are given the help they need to learn, grow and achieve as much as they possibly can in an atmosphere which nourishes a healthy mind and body. We want our children to believe that each one of them holds the power to make a difference in the world through ‘doing all of the good they can.’ 

In music we do this through:

• Planned opportunities to learn music within a wider context alongside other curriculum subjects

• Participation in school productions

• Opportunities for whole school and class enrichment

• A love of music performing and appreciating music encouraged and promoted Extra-curricular opportunities to participate in music, including choir and school performances

• Children will use music as a form of expression

• Children will participate in wider musical activities

3. Unlocking children’s true potential to ‘flourish’ as life-long learners through raising individual expectations, self-belief and exposure to ‘opportunity’

We aim to help our children to be aware of and see ‘opportunity’ beyond their locality and starting points through exposure to the wider world. We aim to provide a broad, balanced curriculum with a wide variety of experiences which nurture the talents and interests of our children enabling them to become resilient, creative, enquiring learners and effective communicators who persevere and aspire for excellence.

In music we do this through:

• Exposure to a wide variety of musical genres through the listening element of the music Curriculum

• ‘Charanga’ programme encourages creativity and enquiry skills in music

4. For our children to ‘do all of the good they can’ by broadening their horizons and developing each of them as a responsible local and global citizen. 

We want our children to appreciate their role as part of our community. We encourage them to ask questions, make informed choices and to take responsibility for the decisions they make. As a result we hope to foster in our children an awareness of the difference they can make as local & global citizens, treating others with compassion and respect.

In music we do this through:

• World Music Day celebration

• School Community - Choral Worship

• Musical link to Maths – Times Table Rockstars Rock Star day

• Christmas Singalong Service ‘Carols Around the Tree’ – local community members invited

• Remembrance Service delivered to the local community in school/ church

At East Halton, Music is taught on a 2 year cycle in EYFS, Key Stage 1, Lower Key Stage 2 and Upper Key Stage 2.

We use the Charanga Programme to support the teaching of Music.

A high quality music education should engage and inspire pupils to develop a love of music and their talent as musicians to ensure that they flourish, increasing their self-confidence, creativity and a sense of achievement. As pupils progress, they should develop a critical engagement with music to sing and compose. We provide a music curriculum which enables each child to reach their full potential, encouraging all children to sing, compose and perform. All children have the opportunity to perform in front of an audience both within and outside of school.

We want our children to look forward with hope by recognising the job opportunities in the music industry, music producers, songwriters or rock stars!! We want our children to remember their music lessons in our school and embrace the musical opportunities they are presented with. 

Charanga Music provides us with the foundation through which we deliver a creative programme of high-quality classroom music activity. Through our delivery of Charanga, the children are exposed to music from a range of historical periods, genres, styles and traditions to review and evaluate in order to provide them with an appreciation for music in all its forms.  They listen to and evaluate the work of great composers, making judgements and expressing personal preferences about the quality and style of music. Children have opportunities to play instruments, both un-tuned and tuned and use technology to develop their musical skills. We provide all children with the chance to take part in performances with an awareness of audience.
